Dogs need several different kinds of nutrients to survive, amino acids from proteins, fatty acids and carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and clean fresh drinking water. PROTEINS AND AMINO ACIDS Dogs can not survive without protein in their diets. All animal based dietary proteins contain 10 specific amino acids that dogs can not make on their own. Known as essential amino acids, they provide the building blocks for many important biologically active compounds and proteins. In addition they donate the carbon chains to make glucose for energy. High-quality proteins have a good balance of all the essential amino acids. (pure meats and organs). Bi-products do not contain a good balance of amino acids. Dogs are known to selectively choose foods that are high in protein and have been known to walk away from food if it is missing just one chain of amino acids, their needs for all 10 essential amino acids is a complex biological response from nature. That is why at Legacy Pet Foods we use only 100% pure meats, that are antibiotic free and hormone free, to ensure the natural biological response for protein is met with our foods. Dietary fats, mainly derived from animal fats provide the most concentrated source of energy in the diet. They supply essential fatty acids that cannot be synthesized by the body and serve as carriers for important fat-soluble vitamins. Fatty acids play a roll in cell structure and function. Food fats also enhance the taste and texture of the dog’s food as well. Essential fatty acids are necessary to keep your dogs skin and coat healthy. Puppy’s and dogs fed ultralow-fat diets develop dry, coarse hair and skin lesions that become increasingly vulnerable to infections. DOGS NEED FAT..... According to the National Research Council: Daily Recommended Allowances for Fat and Protein based on a 40 pound dog that is moderately active. For a dog that is lactating, extremely active or a puppy the minimum requirements per day are double as well the % fed of Legacy RAW would also be adjusted from 2% of body weight for the average dog to 4 – 6 % for growing puppies and lactating dogs. Minimum requirements – 14 grams of fat per day 25 grams of protein per day Calcium requirements - .75 grams per day Phosphorus requirements - .75 grams per day The following is an analysis of Legacy foods, the beef dinners are low in calcium and we recommend feeding once a day with a poultry dinner, supplementing with raw bones and or supplementing with a natural calcium
